Espresso Engine Preview 2
Hello everyone! Thanks for all the feedback, reports and Sugar Daddy interest so far, and welcome to our newly added testers. Please read this entire e-mail before downloading!
First of all, sorry for not keeping our promise on an update within 2 weeks! The grunt work in this beta took longer than expected, and the sheer volume of feedback slowed us down quite a bit. That said, no excuses! We’re still digging through all your reports and will definitely address them — even if this Engine Preview is almost unchanged since 0.9b1, from an end-user perspective. Time is running out in November after these 3 weeks, and as such Espresso will probably be delayed into December.
For Your Eyes Only
It is obviously still quite unfinished, and this is still a private beta (albeit with many testers). To discuss Espresso with others, we have the Wiki and Forums (see below).
What’s New in 0.9b2
Espresso Engine Preview 2 (again) focuses on Sugar development, and adds:
XML + Cocoa API for Text Actions
XML + Cocoa API for File Actions
Cocoa API for custom Itemizer item objects
CSS-based syntax themes: placeholder themes for each Sugar and global user themes
Fixed common crashes
Fixed various small issues with the existing Sugar subsystems
Known Issues in 0.9b2
Preview is still disabled
None of the default Sugars come with any actions
Text actions can’t have key equivalents
Text actions don’t have access to snippets
Tab-triggered snippets are missing
Most of the UI is in an advanced state of decomposition — hang with us here!
Sending Feedback and Bug Reports
For crashes and exceptions, use the dialog Espresso pops up automatically. For other feedback, go to Help > Send Feedback and have your say. If you’re describing a recurring problem, try to include a number of steps that make it appear. This helps us enormously!
Sugar Development, Wiki and Discussion
Sugar developers are invited to join the Forums to get Sugar help and chat with others. The Wiki also offers information on the process. Everyone else is of course also welcome to join! We’d especially like everyone to have a look at Cocoa Sugars; you can get extensive access to Espresso’s syntax system to accomplish cool features.
Download Espresso Engine Preview 2
And finally, the section you are probably looking for: download Espresso 0.9b2. You can also update your existing Espresso build by choosing Espresso > Check for Updates… Important: Espresso only runs on Mac OS X Leopard (10.5).
Thanks giving Espresso a test run, happy testing!
